Salt Dough Snowmen

Our little salt dough snowmen are about the cutest things I’ve ever seen! I wish I could keep them all but they are going to their individual homes today, likely to be treasured for years by sentimental moms like me.

We started with salt dough, as a sensory/play dough activity. Then we created our basic snowman shape.

Salt Dough Recipe

1 cup salt
1 cup plain flour
Up to 1 cup of water (add gradually)

Roll balls of dough and push them together. Some kids used 4 balls for their snowmen – super cute! We didn’t glue them together but they stuck. Pushed in stick pieces for arms.

After drying (we let them sit for a week but they were probably dry sooner, just allowed a week due to when certain kids were here.) we painted them with white tempera and sprinkled them with glitter. We used a fine iridescent glitter from Craftprojectideas.com Let dry – a few hours or day should be plenty long enough. Too much paint = wet dough.

I did the finishing of the snowmen. Certainly older children could do more of the work with a low temp glue gun. I used hot glue to secure the arms (not all of them were very tight), glued on little buttons, tied ribbon (some glue might be necessary) for scarves. I used fabric paint in the squeeze bottles for the faces.

The hats took the longest but don’t be afraid to get it a try! Honestly, it’s not hard and they go together quick! Cut a circle of felt. Cut a long strip and wrap ends around in a circle that will fit on the hat circle. Hot glue ends together. You may need to trim the height of the hat. Cut a small circle and glue to top. Glue hat piece to circle. Glue to snowman’s head.
