Nursery Rhymes, Fingerplays & Songs | Printables

Download my Nursery Rhymes, Fingerplays & Songs | Printables at the bottom of the post. During circle time I’ve been trying to introduce and work on memorizing nursery rhymes with my group. My kids love the repetition and they are learning important literacy skills in the process.

I have a binder full of songs and fingerplays but I wanted them handier and easy to use with my group at circle time. The pictures help the kids “read” the cards.  Humpty Dumpty soon became a favorite!  But it’s time to introduce more/different songs & rhymes so I’ve been making cards for my collection.

This is a practical way to remember the basics at circle time, like nursery rhymes which I think often get forgotten. Nursery rhymes are important!  I think this says it best on the State Library of Louisiana’s website:

Nursery rhymes help young children become ready to learn to read! Children hear new words and new ways of making sentences from nursery rhymes. Many rhymes are also little stories that help children understand and remember a series of events.
Children also start to understand that many words sound alike – they rhyme! This understanding will be a big help to children later when they start learning to spell words. And because many nursery rhymes have nonsense or unusual words in them, children pay attention to them because the words sound different from what they hear most of the time. For example, what does “Hey, Diddle Diddle” actually mean? It doesn’t matter! It’s just fun to say it or sing it!

Simply put, I like that my kids memorize them, sing them together or throughout the day on their own. It gets them using language! I also like that the rhymes create “pictures” in their heads. I love to use pictures, books, puppets, felt stories and music along with nursery rhymes, but I also think it’s good for the child to listen and create their own picture.

There’s also fingerplays and other little songs included that work well for circle time, transitions or just anytime for fun. I like to do these with the little ones while we change diapers, get shoes on, or wash up. There’s not much for music &/or movement included in this set but I’m working on those too & they’re up next!

This Nursery Rhymes, Fingerplays & Songs | Printables collection is incomplete for sure. There are so many children’s songs and rhymes that could be included. These are just some. If you have a favorite that’s not listed here, leave me a message. I’ll continue to add to the collection!

While creating this set of cards, I found some great resources to use along with them:
