Our vehicle’s upholstery is very light, and I’ve been meaning to clean it for a while now. To be honest, this isn’t our favorite car ever and we kind of had a “whatever” attitude about it, but I sincerely do believe in taking care of what you have.

Whose idea was it to use such a light-colored car fabric? My husband is the car washer and detailer around here, but he tends to specialize in exterior cleaning rather than interior. I put the job off, feeling skeptical about how well it would clean up.  I didn’t want to waste my time if it wasn’t going to look any better afterward anyway.

Have tough stains? Car seat stains are a given with kids and car seats! Pets are hard on car interiors too. Next time you need to clean your car seats, follow these easy steps to clean your car with Oxiclean. Deep clean car seats and even floor mats. First, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the loose dirt, cracker crumbs, and pet hair.

I didn’t want to waste my time if it wasn’t going to look any better afterward anyway. This is a bit embarrassing – it’s disgustingly dirty. Makes for good “before” photos! 100% real, that’s for sure.

That doesn’t look so bad huh? I thought it would look worse too. Let’s take a closer look:

Steps to Cleaning Your Car Upholstery Yourself

  1. Clean microfiber cloth and a bucket of OxiClean solution.
  2. Apply solution with a saturated clean rag to saturate the stain. Allow to stand 1-5 minutes.
  3. Blot until the stain is removed and rinse with clean water and blot until dry. Because my seats needed to be fully cleaned, I used my stain remover machine to rinse, brush and then suction up the solution. For best results, be sure the cleaning solution is completely removed from the upholstery.

How did it do?  Excellent! Amazing! It’s very clean and I’m impressed! It was as easy as the process can be and I didn’t have to reapply the stain remover or scrub, scrub, scrub.

I could practically see the stains and dirt removing after I applied the solution to the seat. My experience was that it was an easy way to clean the car and OxiClean makes a wonderful car seat cleaner. It can be used for your total interior carpet as well.

Add Cleaning Power with Bissell Little Green Pro

I’d have to say the portable but powerful Bissell Little Green Pro I used to suction up the cleaning solution was the best method for helping the upholstery dry quickly and preventing residue from being left behind in the seats. I’d definitely recommend one for spot cleaning around the home and using it on a regular basis to freshen up your car upholstery. That way cleaning doesn’t take a lot of time.

@Joe Southard, I haven't tried a spray with a brush, but I imagine your car seats may need a deeper cleaning with more water.

Hi Stacy, the idea to have the stain removed from things that cannot be thrown in the wash is a lifesaver! Thank you for the tips and idea of how to care for your car, with children a ton of stains could be made or even work stuff can cause stubborn stains. What are the products you used usually? All the best!

Did it today. After putting on with clean rag I went over with clean water rag and used shop vac to get out some water. It cleaned the seats but some stains are reappearing. I plan to do just the stains again. It took me several hours to do by hand and then I read to avoid prolonged contact with skin. No problem so far but if doing by grab a pair of gloves.
