As you may have heard, some select boxes of Cheerios™ and Honey Nut Cheerios™ produced over two weeks in July at the Lodi, California plant, have been recalled due to a wheat allergen.  This recall only affects consumers with Celiac disease or a gluten-sensitivity. To learn more about the recall, and if your product is affected please go to: http://blog.generalmills.com/.

Cheerios ™ are basically a staple in our home and we always have them in the cereal cabinet. We always did at home when I was a kid too. I remember enjoying Cheerios ™ with a little sugar (shhh!) on top along with white buttered toast. Yum! I still like it once in a while. My husband is the one who’s a big fan of Cheerios ™ though. All through college (MI State) he ate Cheerios ™ for breakfast everyday along with a toaster pastry. Every. Day.  When we were first married, he did this for a while but then I got him off the toaster pastries! You know that dry powder in the bottom of the bag when the Cheerios ™ are all gone? He *likes* that. Seriously. In the past he has actually put some Cheerios ™ in the blender and made extra Cheerios ™ powder to pour over his cereal! Who does that?! My husband.

Gluten Free Cheerios™
Cheerios ™ are made with Whole Grain Oats as the first ingredient. Oats are inherently gluten free, but the supply of oats contain small amounts of wheat, rye and barley that are inadvertently introduced at the farm or during transportation which prevents the product from being labeled Gluten Free. General Mills developed a process to remove the wheat, rye and barley from our supply of whole oats in order to ensure that the oats in Cheerios are Gluten Free. The other ingredients in their cereal products are already gluten free.

Gluten-Free Cheerios ™ will maintain the same great taste you are used to. In addition, there will not be any differences in price as a result of the change to Gluten Free.

To celebrate the new Gluten-Free line, you can find specially marked boxes of Cheerios™ at Walmart that feature a Buy-A-Box-Give-A-Box label. Each box of Cheerios will have a unique code where shoppers can enter that online and give an e-card and mailed coupon for a free box of Cheerios to a recipient of their choice!

It’s easy to #GiveABox Gluten-Free Cheerios ™ through the “Give a Box” website: http://cbi.as/ohbr

Then enter the code from your box of Cheerios ™.  Enter your information, the recipient’s name and email address and personalize your message. I sent my free box of Cheerios ™ to my husband – the biggest Cheerios ™  fan I know and my sweetheart! I chose the “love” greeting and wrote:

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Cheerios™ are round
and I love you!

Here’s a preview of the greeting and coupon that will be sent to him:

I’m sure he will get a kick out of that during his work day! Since it’s back to school time and the work days are busy, I made some Cheerios™ Granola Bars so we can enjoy Cheerios™ on the go. These bars are satisfying and filling. Make them with which ever ingredients you like best, or with all of them. I left out the almonds in the ones pictured.
