Chinese New Year Preschool Sensory Play

Chinese New Year is a spring festival celebrating the change of the Chinese calendar.  It falls between mid-January and mid-February and celebrations last for two weeks.  We enjoy celebrating Chinese New Year and learning about Chinese culture each year through foods, books, videos, music, dramatic play, sensory play, and art. See our beautiful Chinese New Year Preschool Sensory Play idea for children to explore the Chinese New Year celebration.

Our sensory bin this year featured bright red and yellow colored materials and a variety of textures. There are so many ways to play with this bin – sorting by shapes or colors, pretending to mix and stir or cook, pouring and scooping or using tongs and chopsticks.

As always, children should be supervised while playing with small objects.
We used red because it symbolizes good fortune and joy in Chinese culture and it is found everywhere during the Chinese New Year and other family holidays or gatherings. Yellow/ Gold is considered the most beautiful color.

I like how this sensory bin also lent itself to dramatic play opportunities.
We also have this beautiful piece of fabric for use in dramatic play or in this case as a table covering under our sensory bin.
