How to Use the Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Jar

During group time or morning circle, invite children to take turns pulling a behavior statement from the jar. Read it aloud and ask the group:

“Is this a thumbs up or thumbs down behavior?”

Let the kids discuss and decide. You’ll be amazed at how they really do know! Over time, this activity builds a shared understanding of classroom expectations and gives children a voice in shaping their learning environment. Soon they will remind each other of the rules, making the days easier.

Tip: Since preschoolers aren’t reading yet, you can always make up statements in the moment that match current classroom situations.

Examples of behavior strips include:

  • “Helping with clean up when the song comes on”
  • “Saying ‘ha ha’ to a friend”
  • “Letting another child go first”
  • “Running in the classroom”
  • “Washing hands after wiping your nose”

These statements address everyday classroom behaviors like sharing, hygiene, communication, and self-regulation. They also open the door for important social-emotional conversations.

Why It Works

Encourages Positive Choices

Children learn to identify and reflect on their actions. This builds self-awareness and accountability.

Builds a Caring Community

Kids begin to support each other in making good choices—older children especially love helping peers recognize “thumbs up” behavior.

Flexible and Customizable

You can personalize the behavior slips to match your classroom needs. Whether it’s a recurring issue or a one-time event, just say the statement aloud and let the group weigh in.

Promotes Social-Emotional Development

The activity supports early SEL skills, including empathy, communication, and respectful behavior.

I'm sorry this has been your experience. The file is downloadable, many people have used it. I tried replying to your email but it was returned. I'm sorry I can not help you more, I'm unsure what you need. It's a PDF file and then you should be able to just print it after you save it to your computer. Let me know if I can help you with this. (I see how that your email address has an extra letter - may that's why it didn't go through to you).
