Here’s a little update on the watching the Indian corn and celery grow. The celery is sprouting new leaves. As far as if it will actually grow a stalk of celery, I don’t know because I haven’t kept it that long. If you want to try it, I would plant it in some soil after it starts growing.
Will it grow? Update Growing Indian Corn Experiment
Indian corn is a decorative hard shelled and colorful corn that is available in the fall at grocery stores, orchards or farmers markets. I have not tried this with other types of corn, like field corn for animals. If dry, I would expect it would do the same as the Indian corn.
I would not use “fresh corn” or corn on the cob as it will likely just mold.
In less than a week, you will see growth! I kept mine near a window but there’s not direct sunlight.
The water will turn murky and sour. It will mold. You can drain the water and add fresh to keep it under control.

How cool! I stumbled across your post on Pinterest. My kids and I will be giving this a try in the next month. Thanks!
Beautiful! Did you put it in the sun?
It was near the patio door, but it’s a north window. Not direct light. Good luck.
I did this Indian corn experiment with my class! They love observing it…and it’s getting bigger, and bigger…with little roots shooting everywhere! Thank you!
This is so cool! I’m going to pin it and try it next month!
they can grow corn cobs, if you take each little seed of corn and put inside the dirt in a patio, you can grow your own corn 🙂
after it’s rooted from the water or can you plant directly into soil ?
We have done this in class. My class has really enjoyed it. Did you plant it in soil? I was wondering the same thing.
No, we just sprout it in water! It gets kind of yucky but I just drain the water off and replace it. This way we can watch the roots grow in the tray. We just throw it out when we’re done.
Love this idea. The kids will enjoy watching and observing it. Thanks for the idea
You’re welcome! We’re doing it again this year too.
Awesome idea! I can’t wait to try it. I have lots of crafty ideas and activities on my site too.
Everything’s free. Hope you get a moment to pop on by. 🙂 http://www.teachwithme.com Thanks for sharing.
gracias e muy interesante le pondre en practicaa
I’m gonna try this !
My students will love it.
does it work with regular corn? is it dead? I tought the objective was to show the life cycle, how plants may grow after de “fruit” is dead… is it?
how long will it take to grow ???
great experiment.I would like to do it with my class too. Thanks
Do you have to use Indian corn or will regular corn on the cob work as well??? TIA
Does the corn need to be fresh or dried? Thanks.
Amazing for adults and children
Love this! Did you use fresh corn or dried corn for this experiment?
We used dried Indian corn. I think you could use fresh as well.
How long did it take for sprouts to grow? We are learning about plant adaptations and this would be a GREAT way to show how plants adapts to the surroundings they are in.
In less than a week you will have growth.
Hey, WELL DONE!! This looks really interesting and I’ll try it with my school class.
🙂
