Go outside and dig for worms! Then, bring the excitement into the early childhood classroom. Children love novelty—something new to see, touch, and explore. These worm discovery activities for preschoolers combine nature and science with writing and literacy. Preschoolers can observe a worm and record their findings on the Worm Discovery Activity Page. They’ll color, write, draw, and measure their discoveries. In this blog post, find a Worm Discovery Activity Page, which encourages children to make observations, document their findings, engage in critical thinking, and develop fine motor skills.

Worm Discovery Activity Page
This activity page is designed to accompany real-life worm observations in your early childhood classroom. It’s a hands-on, multi-sensory experience that encourages children to use their senses, develop fine motor skills, and make scientific observations. My group especially liked measuring their worms! You can definitely go dig up worms and use real worms too!

Worm Discovery Activity Steps:
- Observation and Exploration: Start by placing the worms in a clear container with soil. Let children take turns observing them up close. Encourage them to describe how the worms move, what they look like, and how they behave in the soil.
- Drawing & Coloring Fun: Provide crayons or colored pencils and ask the children to draw what they see on their Worm Discovery Activity Page.
- Measuring Worms: Use cubes to determine the length of each worm. Children can record their measurements on the activity page. Are all the worms the same size? Can they find something in the classroom that is the same length as their worm?
- How Does It Feel? Have children gently touch a worm (if they are comfortable). Is it smooth? Slippery? Squishy? Encourage them to describe how it feels and write down their answers.
- Worm Movements: Watch how the worms move. Do they wiggle fast or slow? Do they stretch and shrink? Encourage children to describe or even act out worm movements!
- Where Do Worms Live? Discuss worm habitats. Where do worms like to live? What do they need to survive? Encourage children to think about why worms are important in nature.

Learning About Worms Through the Senses
By combining sensory experiences with engaging activities like drawing, measuring, and observing, you’re not only encouraging a love for learning but also helping young children develop cognitive and fine motor skills. Plus, they’ll have so much fun!
As early childhood educators, creating a supportive and engaging environment is key. Encourage curiosity, ask open-ended questions, and let children share their findings with their friends. Be sure to check out our worm sensory bin and painting with worms activities!

Worm Books for Preschoolers
I’ve selected storybooks about worms for young children to coordinate with the worm discovery activities. Check out Worm Weather, Yucky Worms, Curious About Worms, How to Say Hello to a Worm, Up in the Garden, Down in the Dirt.
