Paper towel (toilet paper roll) crafts are always popular with their abundance and versatility. The Paper Roll Spring Flower Craft is super cute and perfect for spring display, May Day, or a Mother’s Day craft for preschoolers. I think they would also make lovely place setting cards with names written on them for Easter or a birthday party.
It’s a beautiful spring day and we’re feeding the birds! As part of our Birds & Eggs theme, we spent the day learning about bird food and feeding the birds. We made some simple bird feeders and filled the rest of our feeders to hang in the tree.
What do birds eat? Bugs, seeds, and worms. What kinds of seeds do you see in the picture?
Now that birds are migrating back to Wisconsin, we filled our feeders. It doesn’t take long and the birds find them, coming for seed, making a perfect opportunity for us to observe various kinds of birds.
Everyone got to pour a scoop of bird feed into the feeder. Children just want to help! They want that hands-on experience.
Many hands to help make the job go fast and helps them learn valuable skills through trial and error.
Making Cereal Bird Feeders
The Mother Goose Time activity of the day was to make Cheerio bird feeders on pipe cleaners to hang in the tree.
I love how simple and easy this activity is, using materials provided and common things we already have.
While making the feeders, we talked about what kinds of birds might like the treats we were making. The Make & Play card offered ideas for after we hung the feeders in the tree.
It’s always fun to make a project with food – that might be able to get eaten while we’re working!
Such great fine motor practice for little hands!
All done! We twisted the pipe cleaners around so little birds like Chickadees can sit on the pipe cleaner while they eat.
Here’s our little tree full of bird feeders!
We put up mixed seed, suet, sunflower seeds and our Cheerios birdfeeders.
Doing our part to feed the birds!
Yes, I know it’s now JUNE 1st and I’m just posting our Finger Painted Flowers & May Day Baskets. I’m very behind in blogging but I’ll share some of our activities anyway for future inspiration.
To Make Finger Painted Flowers & May Day Baskets
- Pre-cut flower shapes in orange, yellow, purple, pink and yellow construction paper.
- Offer a variety of paint colors on a paper plate.
- Child finger paints flowers
- After flowers dry, attach to stem – we use Craft Project Ideas fuzzy sticks
- Roll paper to make a cone. Staple or tape in place.
- Attach a strip of paper for a handle. Could also use yarn or ribbon.
- We cut grass to make a filler for our baskets. Cut a piece of green construction paper in strips, almost to the end of the paper. Roll and tape to make it circle shaped. Put in basket, tape in place.
- Insert filler, like shredded paper if desired. This helps hold the flowers.
- Insert flowers into basket.
What a treat to hang on anyone’s door, inside or out!
I’ve been waiting for my flowering tree to bloom and finally, it’s happening this week! I’ve also been trying for months to get some photos printed to go in frames I bought at Target. The photos I intended to use just didn’t seem right. I just love this photo I captured a couple evenings ago as the sun was going down.
I realized the colors would be perfect for our bedroom! I really only had one photo I liked for this purpose, so I cropped them to 8×10 (I use FastStone Image Viewer) in two different ways – one is a close up of the main flower. While I’d prefer two completely different photos, this works. If at some point I have another photo I’d like to use, I can always switch it out. Then I printed the pictures on photo paper and inserted them into the frames. Mine were already matted, so you’ll want to consider that when you buy a frame.
From Photo to Art – DIY wall art using photos
- take photo
- edit if desired (PicMonkey is a good way)
- crop to size
- print or develop photos
- insert into frames
It’s really as simple as that. I love taking photos! Using them as art is a great way to display them as well as personalize your home and save money. Besides, if you’re like me, you can never find exactly what you have in mind, so this is a great alternative.
