What Does CACFP Require for Meals?
CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program) focuses on offering balanced meals that include a variety of food groups. Read about the Nutrition Standards for CACFP here. Meal patterns for infants are different from those for older children.
Typical meal components include:
Breakfast
- Milk
- Grain
- Fruit or vegetable
✔️ Exception: Protein Instead of Grain
You may serve a protein (meat/meat alternate) instead of a grain:
✔ Up to 3 times per week
✔ Breakfast only
Lunch/Supper
- Protein
- Grain
- Fruit
- Vegetable
- Milk
Snacks (2 components)
- Any two of the above food groups
You don’t need time-consuming recipes. Simple combinations work best in child care settings.

How to Make Menu Planning Easier
1. Repeat meals children love
It’s okay to reuse favorites. Familiar foods help children feel confident and reduce waste.
2. Build around what you already have
Use ingredients across multiple meals. If you are making chicken, make extra for wraps, pasta or salads. Prep a variety of fruits to use for breakfast and snacks.
3. Keep a rotating system
Instead of starting from scratch each week, rotate menus for 2–4 weeks. This is where planning becomes much easier.
Turn Weekly Menus Into a Monthly Plan
If you already have a weekly plan, you’re on your way!
Simply repeat the planned meals and snacks for the week, swap out a few meals for new ones, and adjust for seasonal foods. You probably won’t want soups in the summer as much as in the winter. Grapes are cheaper at certain times of the year, etc. Create a full month of menus with very little extra work by repeating a weekly menu, swapping a few meals and adjusting for seasonal foods.
To make this even easier, I use Editable Monthly Child Care Menu Templates so I can quickly plug in meals, make adjustments, and reuse them. You can even save them to use from year to year. This makes it quick to scan the menu, adjust it for foods you already have or want to use and build your grocery shopping list from.
Budget-Friendly CACFP Menu Tips
Keeping food costs manageable is important in any child care program.
Try this:
- Use seasonal fruits and vegetables
- Buy in bulk when possible
- Choose simple meals over complex recipes
- Substitute similar items when needed
- Portion foods out by serving sizes to reduce waste
- Use your leftovers! Freeze leftovers to reduce waste.
Menus don’t need to be fancy to be nutritious and CACFP-friendly.
What About Picky Eaters?
It is completely normal for children to go through phases of being picky eaters. As child care providers, you are responsible for planning and serving meals, but ultimately, the children will decide what they choose to eat. It’s important to offer a variety of child-friendly foods that appeal to the group as a whole, keeping in mind that there may always be a child or two who aren’t fond of something on their plate.
In family programs or group center settings, make sure to serve a diverse range of foods without pressuring the children to eat, try, or finish everything on their plates. While it’s a good idea to introduce new foods, always include familiar items on the menu. Encourage children to taste new foods, but avoid forcing them to try or eat anything they don’t want.
As children grow, they become more comfortable trying new foods. Be sure to model eating the foods you serve, and create a relaxing and enjoyable environment during mealtimes by eating with the children.

Simple, Balanced Menus Work Best
Children generally respond better to individual foods instead of dishes that combine all the ingredients, like hot dishes or casseroles. Cook and serve basic foods for best results – sliced apples, cheese chunks, diced chicken, some crackers, green beans and milk, make a complete lunch.
When you focus on simple foods, consistent routines and easy planning systems, you create a mealtime experience that works for both you and the children in your care.
