Orange Cranberry Buttermilk Scones

The beginning of October calls for coffee and comfort food. One of my favorite combinations is orange + cranberry. Or coffee and scones. I have a recipe to share with you, that’s simpler than you’d think – Orange Cranberry Buttermilk Scones.

Orange Cranberry Buttermilk Scones

The ingredients are simple: flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, baking soda, butter, dried cranberries, zest of a whole orange and a little milk.

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, 4 tbsp cup sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in the cold butter until mixture turns crumbly.

Pour in the buttermilk and mix just until combined.

Gently fold in the cranberries and orange zest.

Transfer the flour-buttermilk mixture onto the floured surface and knead till the dough comes together and then shape it into a 8-inch circle.

Orange Cranberry Buttermilk Scones

Use a sharp knife to cut the circle into 8 equal sized wedges. Place the wedges on the greased cookie sheet and brush them with milk and sprinkle the 2 tsp sugar. Bake the Orange Cranberry Buttermilk Scones at 400 F for 16-18 minutes until they turn golden brown.

Orange Cranberry Buttermilk Scones

Ingredients for 8 Scones

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp + 2 tsp sugar, divided
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 5 tbsp cup cold butter
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (homemade or store bought)
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • Zest of a whole orange
  • A little milk for brushing the dough

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease a cookie sheet and keep aside.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, 4 tbsp cup sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until mixture turns crumbly.
  4. Pour in the buttermilk and mix just until combined.
  5. Gently fold in the cranberries and orange zest.
  6. Transfer the flour-buttermilk mixture onto the floured surface and knead till the dough comes together and then shape it into an 8-inch circle.
