For me, becoming a mom was the best experience of my life. It was long hoped for and anticipated. I’m not saying it’s all easy. No matter how much of a “natural” you are, being a mom is an adjustment. After children arrive, life becomes more complex and life will never be the same.

Before the baby comes, all you hear about is the lack of sleep you’ll soon have and how your life will change. Yes, life changes with a little baby but it’s all worth it. I’ve often thought it’s a good thing children start out small and needing just basic needs so you can grow as a parent along with the needs of your child.

Advice for new moms seem to come from every website, book, magazine, relative and stranger. What do all first-time moms need to hear? I could tell you about baby proofing, baby led weaning, discipline theories and must have stuff for baby but this is what I believe new moms need to hear: “This is just a phase.” Meaning this experience or what’s happening now in this moment, will soon pass and be over. Soon this difficult or wonderful time will be just a memory. Or maybe you won’t even remember it. So enjoy it now. Or at least don’t stress.

Repeat after me: This is just a phase. Again. When the days and nights seem long, the crying doesn’t end, you’re physically and emotionally exhausted, the baby is sick, you’re sick or you’re sure you’ve ruined your child, remember, this is just a phase. Soon your baby will be in a new phase, doing new and different and wonderful things! Each age and development has it’s ups and downs but there’s much to enjoy all along the way. It helps to remember that your child isn’t being difficult, not fussing without reason or anything like that. He or she is growing, changing, developing and becoming the person he or she will be. You may find it helpful to learn about the stage of development your baby is in so you can help baby through it.

But…having a baby is not inexpensive. The diapers, wipes, formula, clothing, gear, toys, medical expenses, child care and more… guess what, this is just the beginning!
